Brentwood taught me what it meant to step out of my comfort zone. As someone who wasn’t used to big schools or high expectations, it could’ve been overwhelming. But the people from teachers to classmates made the difference. There was always someone checking in, always someone willing to help.

The biggest thing I got from Brentwood was belief in myself. I came in unsure and left feeling ready for whatever came next. My advice to new students: speak up, even if your voice shakes. You matter.

Looking back, I wish I had spoken up more in class, in dorm meetings, even just socially. I had ideas and feelings, but I kept a lot inside during my first year. Over time, I realized Brentwood was the kind of place where people actually wanted to hear your voice. I just had to find the courage to use it. Give yourself time to adjust, but don’t stay hidden. Join a club, raise your hand, talk to your houseparent. Your presence matters, even if you’re quiet. You belong here, even before you believe it.

The community without a doubt. Brentwood made me feel seen, especially when I wasn’t sure where I fit in. Teachers took the time to know me beyond my grades, and friends showed up when it mattered. It wasn’t always easy, but I always felt supported. That kind of genuine care — it stays with you.

If you're new go to the Interhouse Art Paint-In. Even if you don’t think you’re an artist. And try the sweet potato fries with chipotle mayo. Game changer.

The academics were challenging, especially transitioning in Grade 10. But Mr. McPherson’s history class changed how I thought about learning. He encouraged us to question, to debate, to dig deeper. I learned to write with purpose and think critically which prepared me for arts at UBC.

I joined the squash team for fun and stuck with it. The coaching staff never made you feel small for being a beginner. Brentwood made sports accessible, and I always appreciated that.

I took Visual Arts and dabbled in Photography. Our end of year exhibition was held in a local café, and seeing my photos up on the wall that was surreal. The arts faculty really invested in us, even if we weren’t the best. That meant a lot.

BIPOC and B-Well were the heart of my time there. We hosted the first BIPOC Youth Conference, and being part of that gave me purpose. It wasn’t performative but the school genuinely encouraged tough conversations and growth.

I was in Rogers House. It was quiet, and that worked for me. I appreciated having space but also knowing someone was always a few doors away. Shoutout to Mr. Neufeld for always having tea ready during late-night talks.

Crooks Hall’s brunches on weekends were a highlight. I was a fan of the veggie omelets and hash browns. The kitchen staff knew most of us by name, and that made the place feel warm.

Mill Bay isn’t huge but Toronto is close by, but the nature is everything. I’d often walk down to the boathouse just to clear my head. The sunsets were unreal.

I liked that social life didn’t have to be loud. There were parties and events, sure, but there was also space for deep talks, board games, or poetry nights. You could find your people.
