Reflections and Advice:
1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
Hillcrest is a Christian classical education boarding school. They teach students to think critically about the things they hear. The teachers care about the spiritual growth and faith of their students.Hillcrest’s school building looks like a castle and the upper floors of the building are where the dorms are located. So it’s like the students are living in a castle.
2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
Being surrounded by Christian classmates and Christian teachers really helped solidify my faith. I have never been at a point of wavering faith because my foundation has been rock solid, with the help of hillcrest staff.
3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
Advice I would give to kids going to boarding school is get involved. The temptation to be by yourself and exclude yourself because you’re scared of the new environment. The best way to make the best experience of a boarding school is to make friends with people you otherwise wouldn’t have a chance to make friends with. Hillcrest students are always excited to make new friends with people from new places, and are very welcoming.
4.) What did you like most about your school?
The friends and the teachers.
5.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
Get to know the teachers. They are very welcoming and fun to talk to. They care for you well being and really want to see the best for you.
Academics:
1.) Describe the academics at your school - what did you like most about it?
Academics at hillcrest are challenging, and are a good prep for college. I have had many friends say how classes in college felt easier because of material they learned at hillcrest first.I enjoyed how the teachers were always available to answer questions and were very welcoming. They had the patience to help me work through problems that I didn’t understand.
Athletics:
1.) Describe the athletics at your school - what did you like most about it?
The programs I was a part of were always competitive. Good numbers and very good coaches. I liked how each of the coaches pushed us to not only be great players, but great men of faith.
Art, Music, and Theatre:
1.) Describe the arts program at your school - what did you like most about it?
The music program is very well lead, and had many great concerts in my time there. The musical program is also very great, very well put on productions. The choir is able to go on tours around the US each year to several different churches. My favorite part of the musical program is the fact that the songs they perform are either classical pieces of music or Christian based music and that has a lot of meaning.
Extracurricular Opportunities:
1.) Describe the extracurriculars offered at your school - what did you like most about it?
Along with student council, Hillcrest offers many other clubs, like chess club, movie club, and an AV club.I liked being a part of student council as I liked to help lead and organize events for my fellow classmates.
Dorm Life:
1.) Describe the dorm life in your school - what did you like most about it?
Hillcrest gets students not only from all over the US but all over the world. I really enjoyed meeting friends from different parts of the world and learning about their culture. I have made many life long friends from my time here and look forward to traveling and meeting them.
Dining:
1.) Describe the dining arrangements at your school.
For boarding students breakfast, lunch and supper are offered every day and there is a community kitchen located in the dorms for students that like to cook for themselves as well.
Social and Town Life:
1.) Describe the school's town and surrounding area.
Fergus falls, where hillcrest is located, is a very family friendly Christian community. There are many churches in town so it’s easy to find a church that fits exactly what you’re looking for. There are many restaurants with great food, and grocery stores within walking distance to pick of snacks for the dorms.
2.) Describe the social life at your school - what did you like most about it?
Students are very friendly and with the smaller class sizes I was able to be friends with everyone in my grade which I really appreciated. The families in town are very welcoming to form students, often inviting them into their homes to create a family atmosphere around the school.
